The Cambrian News has been named as a finalist for a prestigious national news award, in the latest recognition of its impact.
For the second year in succession, our Welsh title is in the running for the news brand of the year (small) at the Regional Press Awards.
Organisers say: “The Regional Press Awards have long been a fixture in UK journalism, recognising the grit, determination, and sheer talent that define our industry. Past winners include some of the biggest names and stories to come out of local newsrooms, and this year promises to be no different.”
The Regional Press Awards 2025 winners will be announced at central London venue Quaglinos March 12.
In his weekly email to subscribers, editor Mick O’Reilly said: “Last year, the Cambrian News was recognised as the second-best small news brand across some 900 titles in the United Kingdom. This year, the paper is hoping to go one better.
“For the second year running, the Cambrian News has been shortlisted by judges in the annual UK Regional Press Awards in the small news brands category. And it’s also up against the Cambridge Independent, the outlet that pipped the Welsh weekly to the title last year.
“Up to last year, the Cambrian News had never been shortlisted. To be runner-up was a tremendous achievement, considering that the award covers nearly a thousand titles.
“But to be honest, this year is a bit of a grudge match and we would like to go one better. It would be nice to topple the Cambridge Independent to the title.
“We have been on a bit of a role when it comes to earning honours from newspaper readers and peers, underscoring its commitment to quality journalism, local reporting and not being afraid to ask awkward questions and hold those in power to account.”
The finalist placing is the latest recognition for the Cambrian News.
In October the News was shortlisted for the 2024 Making a Difference Award run by the News Media Association for a series of articles on cancer treatment waiting times, which was displayed in a showcase of powerful national and local newspaper investigations and campaigns.
Running during the industry’s Journalism Matters campaign, the campaign was in the running for a prize decided by the Making a Difference public vote for the best local and national campaigns.
Cambrian News reporter Deb Luxon was one of the six finalists in the Young Journalist of the Year category in the annual Society of Editor’s Media Freedom Awards 2024.
Our Welsh publication, established in 1860, beat out rivals from across the nation to win the 2023 Newspaper of the Year accolade at the Welsh Media Awards gala in Cardiff last year. The title was again in the running this year for the same award.
Last month the Cambrian News topped the latest table for user engagement.
