Your Local Wellington Weekly News Team
The communities we serve:The Wellington Weekly News serves the market town of Wellington, which has a population of 14,500, and the many surrounding villages.
Our approach to local news:The Wellington Weekly News aims to be a ‘truly local newspaper’, as it says on its masthead, and seeks to provide readers with news and sport coverage they will not see elsewhere. ‘The Welly’, as it is fondly known in town, covers all the major local stories and issues, and the minutiae of local life – stories which are important or of interest to our varied constituency of readers.
What is great about the area we serve:Wellington has a wonderful community spirit where townsfolk go out of their way to help others, as was seen throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and numerous active community groups. The town offers everything local people need day-to-day with three supermarkets and lots of great independent shops, a secondary school and four primary schools – and a wonderful art deco cinema, among other amenities, along with great countryside and vibrant villages on the doorstep.
How we help advertising clients:The local and experienced sales team at the Wellington Weekly News use their knowledge of the products and areas we serve to help advertisers. Our team seeks to offer clients the best possible experience and outcome for their spend, regardless of how much that is. We take our time to discuss our advertisers’ needs and tailor-make packages for the newspaper and website to suit their budget and distribution requirements.
“The paper covers all the news it can but tries to accentuate the positive where possible.”
- Wellington Weekly NewsHow we make a difference:The Wellington Weekly News is the main source of local news in the town and surrounding area, breaking new stories and stories which will not be seen elsewhere. The paper covers all the news it can but tries to accentuate the positive where possible, reporting, for example, the good work carried out by so many local people during the Covid-19 pandemic, and generally in other areas of town life.
Our history: The first edition of the Wellington Weekly News was published on November 15, 1860, by a local man, Richard Corner. Two people who had long associations with the WWN were Lloyd Jefferies, editor from 1953-87, and Tony Brown, a reporter for more than 40 years until he retired in 1996. Sir Ray Tindle bought the WWN in 2006 when the then owner reorganised its regional titles.
