Crediton Courier celebrates 50th birthday

A party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Crediton Courier newspaper has been held.

The event saw scores of guests go along to the Boniface Centre on Wednesday, November 27 to mark the occasion.

There was a display of the Crediton Courier’s history, featuring its first edition, old photographs and old technology once used to produce the newspaper.

The Turning Tides Project provided a spread of food, Crediton and District Lions Club members served drinks and Crediton Town Band played a selection of carols.

A special celebratory cake made by Mrs Wendy Quick was cut by Crediton Courier Editor Alan Quick and former staff, and speeches were given praising the newspaper and the late Sue Read.

Sue Read was one of the founders of the Crediton Courier in 1974 and died recently at the age of 80 on Sunday, November 17.

Guests were also told about Crediton Talking News, an audio version of the newspaper recorded by volunteers and distributed for free to the blind and partially sighted.

Crediton Courier Editor Alan Quick said at the event: “A big thank-you to all of you for helping the Courier reach this milestone, 50 years.

“We cannot forget Sue’s lifetime of commitment to Crediton and its communities through her service with the paper.

“She was an inspirational leader, very caring, committed, she was professional and incredibly hard-working.”

HM Deputy Lieutenant of Devon John Lee OBE also spoke at the party.

He said: “For me, Sue Read was the Crediton Courier.

“Wherever you were in Crediton or out in the villages in the community, Sue Read would be there… with a camera, ready to capture a memory.

“The Crediton Courier has endured for 50 years. It’s brought the community together.

“It’s still got those core facts and information that we all want to know about what’s happening in our community.”
